Crossing over the old railway station, the "bridge" has changed a lot over the years. Wansbeck Sq was built (on the left of the photo just past the HSBC Bank and YMCA charity shop). The square itself is home to a number of properties including a large supermarket (originally Hintons then Presto's, Safeway's - now Wilkinsons) with the Council Offices situated on the three floors above. Smaller shopping units such as Fawcetts and Bookless which make up the square are there today.

Across the road is Argus and Harvey's furniture store.
