Information
and History
Built
around 1890, the Grand was one of three public houses built after the
town changed its no liquor status. An impressive building that at its
rear had a cobbled courtyard, stables and perimitter wall (about 6ft
high) built of sandstone blocks, it dominated the area for decades until
its sad demise in 1983.
It
was replaced by a building made up of different store units which over
the following years was home to such names as Walter Wilsons, Liptons
(?) supermarket and Mills newsagents (where I used to buy all my Marvel
comics) now all long since closed. Today, Iceland foodstores reside
there (on the left side of the building in the above photo).
