Information
and History
This
photo was taken from the western side of Station road with its quieter
shopping area. For as long as I can remember some of Ashington's more
specialised shops can be found on either side of the road. Although many
old shops have long since disappeared the area still retains its much
more "leisurely & less hectic" way of life.
Over
the years I can recall such places as Pierronies the ice cream parlour
(last shop on the right in photo) now long since closed, an opticians
now stands on the site. H & H Motorcycles (last shop on left in
photo) now an Insurance vendor. Clives the Shoeshop which is still there
as is Donkins the Bakery. Crisps the toy, bicycle and stationary shop
was one of Ashington's most favourite stores during the 70's and early
80's, I can remember spending many a happy hour in there when little
playing with the scalectrix, the Hornby train layout and other toys.
Anyone remember Clackers?! Crisps closed in the early 80's and a second
hand furniture and brick-a-brac shop stands there now....
